With a Flash of awesomeness… Ultima IV is reborn

In all my years of gaming and geekdom, few games in the last 10 years have given that sense of wonder, adventure, and awe as the games from the 1980’s did. In fact the four stand-out games for myself were in no particular order “HitchHikers Guide To The Galaxy”, Zork I,II &III, Kings Quest [the whole series..actually most Seirra games at the time were amazing even LSL ;)], and the one that stands out the most and is still a game that other RPG’s are compared too was the Ultima Series and most especially the masterpiece of the series, UltimaIV: Quest of the Avatar.

The graphics were only 16colour EGA pixels (before even sprites) , but the gameplay and reality/truth of the characters and adventure were, and still are, second to none.

Sadly after Ultima IV the next two games were complete and utter flops due to too much technology puffery and not enough story/gameplay, and there will be no more Ultima adventures. Though EA did release it all to the Public Domain a few years ago, so at least you can find it again.. though it is still in Apple II format and requires strange incarnations to make it work on modern systems (or even 10year old systems)

So what does an old time gamer like myself do to relive those glory days when we were stuck inside with our trusty Apple IIe listening to the sound of the single sided drive spin and wondering what next will occur in that beloved land of Brittania ruled by Lord British himself no less.

We wait, that’s what we do.. we wait and wonder and then, like a gift. Our prayers, our hopes, nay our dreams are answered by a Flash of … well umm Flash.

Blair Legget, an enterprising, talented, and  out-of-work mainstream games industry veteran, who from now on is called Sir Awesome of Britannia has not only ported the  Apple II version of Ultima IV to Flash for browser play he has also made some improvements.

Some purists will moan and groan into their mead about these “improvements” but I myself after looking through them all can basically state that they are exactly the ones that were needed in the original and we all griped about not having in the first place. In fact, I am very impressed.

For a list of all the improvements, how to play, and other tidbits head on over to Sir Awesome’s web page here at Phi Psi Software, and the Game is there too.

Now I’m off to find me some mead at Buccaneers Den before dashing off to score me some Balron loot.

So just what do superheroes do if the washing machine is on the fritz? [Yes there are coloured dingus’s shown here.. handle it.. umm I mean.. be mature.. LOL]

A comic book store owner dressed as Spider-Man became a real superhero for the day when he caught an alleged thief trying to steal an X-Men omnibus.

Michael Baulderstone, 45, was dressed as Spider-Man as part of a fancy dress open day at comic Centre in Adelaide, Australia, confronted the man when he claims he spotted him taking the £100 book.

Security tapes show Mr Baulderstone, addressing the man before stopping him and confiscating the book. On top of that, a group of Jedi knights blocked the door to prevent him from escaping, along with The Flash.

Awesomeness. Now I want the video!
